"Terror makes victims of us all"
|
"Action stimulates reaction. Violent provocation leads to a violent
response, which in turn leads to an even more violent act of retribution, which
is met with yet more sickening and amplified atrocity. So any high moral ground
is lost in the morass of accusation and counter-accusation, whilst the number
of innocent victims multiplies.
"Terror makes victims of us all - and the repercussions of the events
of Tuesday 11 September will no doubt be felt in our own land and
city." |

That
was the chilling warning given by Bishop Tom at Evensong in
Southwark Cathedral
on Sunday 16 September.
The
Bishop was speaking on what should have been a joyous occasion - the service to
licence Christine Hardman as the first woman Archdeacon in Southwark Diocese
and James Buxton as Succentor at the Cathedral (see link below).
But,
uppermost in everyone's thoughts was the disaster that had taken place in New
York the previous Tuesday.
In his
sermon Bishop Tom said that our feelings following this event were 'wibbly
wobbly' just like the bridge which had been built to link the south bank of the
Thames with St Paul's.
In the
same way as that bridge needs to be dampened in order to work properly our
feelings of anger and outrage need to be controlled in order that a right
response is made to the atrocity.
Bishop
Tom has spoken of a need for restraint and for justice in the press, on TV and
on radio in his regular Thought for the Day slot and other broadcasts. He is
especially anxious that our response should be measured and that there should
not be a backlash against people of other faith communities.
