Millennium News
St George's Camberwell celebrated their Patronal Festival in April with the dedication of a Millennium Bell - the church's first bell. Over £12,000 was raised to pay for the bell and it's housing. Bishop Tom presided over the celebrations
which were attended by over 200 people. This was followed by a roast dinner for 110
people. Passion Play in the Park Planning for one of the biggest events for the people of Greenwich in Millennium Year is well underway and now everyone has a chance to join the Passion Play 2000 company! The Passion Play is a new Miracle Play Cycle for Greenwich in the new Millennium to be performed in Greenwich Park on Good Friday, 21 April. The 1,000 people in the cast will perform seven Miracle Plays before joining in with the final Passion Play telling the story of the last week of Jesus' life. Seven community groups will be devising the Miracle Plays in workshops with director John Doyle from the end of the summer. John has devised the framework, selected the miracles, and written the script for the Passion Play itself. There are plans to record the performance and publish the play - and it is hoped that a tradition of regularly performing the cycle will continue into the new Millennium. To add to the many groups already committed to the project, John Doyle, actor Ben Thomas and project administrator Susan Edwards are now looking for individuals to take part and are an open session in the park near the bandstand on Saturday 12 June from 2-4pm for anyone interested in joining a play or helping in any way. To take part you need enthusiasm, energy. You don't need experience, special musical or drama skills. It costs nothing to join the cast, and is a chance to help shape a work of theatre which could last just as long as the mediaeval cycles have. For more information, phone Greenwich BETA (Blackheath and East Greenwich Trust for the Arts) based at St. George's Vicarage on 020-8858 3006 or Susan Edwards on 020-7639 4413.
