Moving on in MINISTRY


Getting a job

Thursday 7th September 2006
Morning Course 10am-1pm

Venue:
Stricklen Room, Trinity House

Led by:
Ven Christopher Skilton (Archdeacon of Lambeth)

Canon Dr Jane Steen (Director of Ministerial Training)

Numbers:
Min 6, Max 20

Course intended for:
Stipendiary curates in their second year or later

Content of Course:
A short guide to ways of seeking new posts in the Church of England

Aims:
To help curates feel confident about moving on - central processes, the Lee list, patronage trusts, the Crown & Senior appointments Lists; advertised jobs; the internal processes in Southwark & elsewhere.

Learning objectives of course:
By the end of the session, participants will:
1. have heard about whom to consult about seeking a post;
2. know about ways in which the appointment process works;
3. will also learn about the wider appointments process for stipendiary clergy in the C of E England.

Teaching methods:
Talks with handouts & questions

Assessing Course’s Effectiveness:
The course will be going well if people ask the questions they feel are the most basic but to which actually no-one will know the answer and no-one will like to admit it.

Reading/Preparation for Course?:
There is no necessary prior reading. However, the following books might be useful:

'The Curate’s Guide”, ed John Witcombe – final chapter on ‘Moving on’

“The Vicar’s Guide”, ed David Ison – might make you think about some of the issues you’ll face in a first parish.

Theological, Philosophical or Methodology Participants need be aware of ?:
It is assumed that curates will be seeking to continue or ministry within the C of E.

Note: This course forms a series with those courses on CVs and Interview Skills
(12th & 19th September 2006).


Writing a CV

Tuesday 12th September 2006
Day Course
10am – 3pm

Venue:
London Diocesan House, 36 Causton Street SW1P 4AU

Led by:
Lawrie Pattinson, Reader and Parish Ministry Development Adviser and Gill How, external facilitator

Numbers:
Depends on teaching space. You must book by 1st September 2006

Course intended for:
Stipendiary clergy including curates

Content of Course:
Practical tips and handouts on basic CV writing; making the best of your talents and strengths visible on your CV.

Aims:
To increase your confidence in saying what you’re best at.

Learning objectives of course:
By the end of the session, those attending will have experienced concentrated attention on making the best of themselves in a balanced, appealing and confident way.

Teaching methods:
Talks, with opportunity for questions; practical input.

Assessing Course’s Effectiveness:
The open dynamic of the group.

Reading/Preparation for Course?:
There may be some preparatory work sent in advance; this is why registration is required by 1st September

Theological, Philosophical or Methodology Participants need be aware of ?:
None. This course may be done in conjunction with those in the Diocese of Southwark on 7th September and in the Diocese of London on 19th September.


Handling a Job Interview

Tuesday 19th September 2006
Day Course
10am – 3pm

Venue:
London Diocesan House, 36 Causton Street SW1P 4AU

Led by:
Lawrie Pattinson, Reader and Parish Ministry Development Adviser and Gill How, external facilitator

Numbers:
Depends on teaching space. You must book by 1st September 2006

Course intended for:
Stipendiary clergy including curates

Content of course:
The interview and selection process (for posts in the Church of England).

Aims:
To increase your confidence presenting yourself

Learning objectives of course:
By the end of the session, those attending will have had practice in handling difficult questions and have developed greater understanding of their own responses in the process.

Teaching methods:
Talks, with opportunity for questions; practical input.

Assessing course’s effectiveness:
The open dynamic of the group.

Reading/Preparation for Course?:
There may be some preparatory work sent in advance; this is why registration is required by 1st September

Theological, Philosophical or Methodology Participants need be aware of ?:
None. This course may be done in conjunction with those in the Diocese of Southwark on 7th September and in the Diocese of London on 12th September.


New Area Deans

Wednesday 22nd November 2006
Day Course 10am-4pm

Venue:
Stricklen Room, Trinity House

Led by:
The Ven Christine Hardman (Archdeacon of Lewisham) & The Ven Chris Skilton (Archdeacon of Lambeth)

Numbers:
6 to 20

Course intended for:
Area Deans appointed 2005/2006

Content of course:
1. To inform on the scope and nature of role and explore how this applies in participants’ own context.
2. Legalities, particularly relating to marriage laws and church representation rules.
3. Deanery strategies for mission.

Aims:
To better equip Area Deans for the role they have/ will be taking on.

Learning objectives of course:
By the end of the session, participants will understand  the nature of, and take up with greater confidence, the role of Area Dean.

Teaching methods:
Input, small group discussion; plenary discussion.

Assessing course’s effectiveness:
This is a pilot course. We will report on evaluation re delivery, and six months later to review how useful it has been in practice.

Reading/Preparation for course?:
1. Area Deans’ Handbook (necessary) – available from Bishop’s House
2. Deanery Review (necessary) – available from Andrew Lane / Simon Parton at Trinity House

Theological, Philosophical or Methodology Participants need be aware of ?:
We would expect participants to be ‘reflective practitioners’: people of faith, rooted in spirituality & the Christian tradition on which they can draw with confidence in witness & service to the gospel.
